New Active Archive Alliance Report Highlights Current State of Active Archive Market

Innovative Approach to Data Storage and Archiving Enables Easy Access to All Data, All the Time

Boulder, CO, April 14, 2016 – The Active Archive Alliance today announced the availability of a new report: “Active Archive and the State of the Industry,” which highlights how active archives are meeting the current challenges of data archiving and long-term storage and are well-positioned to address the challenges of the future.

Active archive software technologies allow existing file systems to expand over flash, disk, tape and other storage technologies. As a result, an active archive provides organizations with a persistent view of less frequently accessed data and makes it easy to access files whenever needed, regardless of the storage medium being utilized.

According to the report, “approximately 90 percent of the data in the world today was created within the past two years and the vast majority of it is not changed once created reaching archival status in a relatively short period of time. Overall, IT budgets are relatively flat, yet newly created digital data is growing at over 40 percent annually, and is now being generated by billions of people, not just by large data centers as in the past, mandating the emergence of an ever smarter and a more cost-effective and secure long-term storage infrastructure. Top external factors driving long-term retention requirements include compliance regulations, business risk, security exposure and the rapid emergence of Big Data analytics. For most organizations, facing hundreds of terabytes or several petabytes of archive data for the first time can trigger a need to redesign their entire archival storage infrastructure.”

“The growing complexity of long-term data storage combined with cost, compliance, and the explosion of unstructured data are all driving the need for more advanced storage capabilities,” said Peter Faulhaber, Chairman of the Active Archive Alliance. “An active archive provides an innovative way for organizations to address the unique challenges of long-term data storage.  This new report is a valuable resource for understanding the ways in which an active archive can be a strategic and cost-effective part of a company’s long-term data retention plan.”

An active archive can be implemented on premises, in the cloud, or in both places as the cloud is now embracing both disk and tape tiers and archival cloud services have momentum. In addition, object storage software or appliances can transform an archive into an ‘active’ archive that is positioned between high-performance storage and low-cost disk or tape.

By delivering an online, accessible, affordable data management platform, active archives are fast becoming the de facto approach for meeting the data growth, performance, and long-term retention challenges of today as well as those that lie ahead.
